Jaimala
The first ritual done before the actual wedding ceremony where the couple exchange garlands made of fresh flowers.
Antarpaat
A curtain is formed between the bride and the groom. The bride is escorted by her maternal uncle to the Mandap. During the ceremony, the curtain is lowered.
Kanyadaan, hasta MilapandCarmella
Kanyadaan is that moment when the father of the bride gives the hand of his daughter into the groom’s hand after which, the saree of the bride is tied to the shawl of the groom in hasta Milap ritual. A cord is then tied around the neck of the couple by the elders of the family in order to ward off any evil, which is known as varmala.
Madhuparka/panchamrut
A bride’s family member washes the feet of the groom while he is offered a drink of honey and milk.
JootaChurai
It is the most entertaining and exciting ritual of Gujarati weddings. When the madhuparka is going on, the bride’s sisters try to hide the groom’s footwear and only return them after he gives them a certain amount of money
Mangalpheras and Saptapadi
There are 4 pheras instead of 7 in a Gujarati wedding as compared to most Hindu weddings. The mantras are chanted by the priest, while the couple takes to go round a fire which is sacred. Seven steps are taken together which are known as the saptapadi. The elders then bless the couple.
Cheropakaryo
It is one of the funniest rituals during a Gujarati wedding. The groom catches hold of the saree of the mother in law and asks to be given more gifts. Her sareee is filled with gifts and cash by those who attended the wedding and it is then given to the groom.
